My name is Helen Jackson-Baker, and I am an active member of Turner Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hyattsville, MD.
Throughout my time at Turner Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, I have participated in a variety of ministries and held several leadership roles. My service included being a Sunday School Teacher, Class Leader, Chairperson of Women’s Day, Usher Board member, Choir member, afterschool tutoring program and a delegate to the Annual Conference. My commitment to faith-based leadership is further demonstrated through my current roles as President of the Johanna Morris Women’s Missionary Society, 2nd Vice President of the Lay Organization, Secretary of the Official Board and Grief Share Facilitator.

I am a dedicated educator and community leader, bringing over 47 years of experience to District of Columbia Schools with a focus on both elementary and special education. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education from District of Columbia’s Teachers College, as well as a master’s degree in special education from Trinity College. My commitment to student development encompasses PreK3 through 8th grade, where I have served as a classroom teacher, Special Education Resource Teacher, Reading Interventionist, Mentor, Special Education Coordinator, member of the Leadership Team, and Union Representative. I have been recognized as a Highly Effective Educator. In addition to my work in education, I worked in the private sector, serving as a supervisor and work safety specialist.

My dedication to civic and community engagement is reflected in my active membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; participation in the Washington DC Chapter of National Epicureans Incorporated; volunteer service at Howard University Hospital; and membership with DC Democratic Women. My favorite hymn is Total Praise, and my favorite scripture is Psalm 121. I will lift mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1–2, KJV)
