Sharon Medley Purcell, Historiographer
Fourth-generation AME Sharon Medley Purcell is a lifelong member of Brown Memorial in Washington, D.C. At an early age, she was a member of the Amanda Rogers Missionary Society (ARMS), Young People’s Division (YPD) where she represented the conference in the Princess Contest and later became ARMS YPD President. Mrs. Purcell currently serves as the Historiographer/Statistician of the WMS Washington Conference Branch.
In addition to being President of ARMS she belongs to the church Trustee Board, The Stewardship and Finance Team, the Lottie Wyatt Medley Lay Organization, the Church Tech/ Media team and the Lillian M. Gary Scholarship Committee.
Sharon received awards from The National Council for the Social Studies the National Science Foundation and National Geographic Society. After 35 years of teaching in DC Public Schools Mrs. Purcell retired, mentored new teachers and volunteered at the African American Museum of History and Culture. She is a proud member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.
